Price the lighting setup, not the image. The first hero shot of a SKU costs you most of the project; the second angle costs minutes, and the fortieth product in the same catalog costs less again. Quote per setup with additional angles priced as a marginal add-on, and quote catalog work as a per-SKU rate that falls with volume. Artists who quote per image either lose the catalog to someone who did not, or win it and work for free from image three onward.

Notice how much of the ladder is not the ladder. A mid-level artist on hard-surface game assets bills $61–$121/hr; a senior making stylized props for mobile bills $72–$132. Five extra years buys you roughly what switching niche buys you, and switching niche takes a quarter. The specialist row is not a reward for another five years of the same work either — simulation and lookdev is a different job that happens to share a filename extension.

Project-Based Pricing for 3D Modeling
Most 3D work is quoted per model, and most of it is quoted wrong, because "a 3D model" describes both a doorknob and a dragon. The figures below are the hours each job actually takes multiplied by the rate for the niche it belongs to — not a single blended rate applied to everything with vertices.

The trap in per-model pricing is that the model is the small part. A sculpt that looks finished in a viewport still needs retopology, UVs, texturing, and lookdev before anyone else's pipeline can open it, and those hours are invisible in the brief. This is why the same character is $1,900 in one quote and $10,000 in another: one artist is selling a mesh and the other is selling something that deforms correctly at a polycount the engine will accept.
Quote per model when the brief is concrete and you have built the thing before. Quote hourly when the design does not exist yet — concept work, and any character whose face the art director has not settled on. Mid-level US rates. The hourly column is the $55–$110 baseline times each niche multiplier — character art 1.15×, hard-surface game asset 1.1×, architectural visualization 0.95×, product rendering 1.0×. Low is the bottom of that band on the fewest hours, high is the top of it on the most, and the midpoint is the middle of both. The environment row is a ten-piece modular kit costed as ten 3–8 hour assets; quoted at stylized and mobile rates instead of hard-surface it comes to $1,320–$7,040 for the same geometry, about 27% less.
Read down the midpoint column and the four asset types span 3× — $1,680 to $5,060. The hourly rates behind them span 1.2×: $76 an hour on archviz against $92 on character art. Everything else in that gap is hours. A character model does not cost three times a five-shot product pack because character artists charge three times as much; it costs three times as much because it takes roughly two and a half times as long and carries a 15% rate premium on top of that.
Which end of a row you land on is decided before you open the software. The low column is a brief that has already been settled: a reference sheet, a spec you have read, a SKU photographed from the angles you have to match. The high column is a brief with an unresolved person in it — an art director who has not settled on the face, a facade still being redesigned, a client who wants to see the product in three finishes before choosing one. None of that is a rate negotiation, which is why a written scope earns more on this table than a higher number does.

Game Asset vs. Architectural Visualization vs. Product Rendering Rates
These are the three markets most freelance 3D artists actually sell into, and they pay within about 16% of one another per hour. The hourly rate is the least interesting thing about them. What differs is how the work recurs, and where the margin leaks out.

The hourly bands nearly overlap, which is the point. Choosing between these three on rate alone is choosing on the one variable that barely moves. Choose on the last two rows instead. Product rendering has the best economics of the three because the work compounds: the first hero shot of a SKU costs you most of the project, the second angle costs minutes, and the fortieth product in the same catalog is nearly free. Archviz has the worst, because the building is still being designed while you render it, and every redesign spends hours you already sold.
Catalog work also arrives attached to jobs that are not yours. The budget that buys the render usually buys the product copy beside it and the page it sits on, so the e-commerce client asks whether you do those too. Quote them as separate lines at their own rates — copywriter rates are billed per word or per project and graphic designer rates per layout — rather than folding them into a per-image fee, which is how a forty-SKU render job quietly becomes an unpaid marketing retainer.
Game asset work splits in two, and the average hides it. AAA and hard-surface work pays the best hourly rate of the three at $61–$121/hr, because you are modelling to a technical budget somebody else wrote and no asset store sells compliance with it. Stylized and mobile game work is the lowest-paid niche in 3D at $44–$88/hr — below archviz — for the opposite reason: a client can search a store, find a finished and rigged version of the thing you were about to model, and buy it before your quote arrives. That is the single most important fact about pricing 3D work, and it has nothing to do with how good you are.

The tool does not set your rate — the pipeline does. What the list below is really describing is which doors each piece of software opens, and which line of your overhead it lands on.

Nobody pays a Blender artist less for using Blender. Clients buy the asset, not the file that made it — and freelancers who believe otherwise talk themselves out of rates they could have had. What is true is narrower and more useful: a studio contract that specifies Maya or 3ds Max deliverables is not negotiable, so the software determines which jobs you are eligible for rather than what those jobs pay. The exception is Houdini, and it is the exception that proves the rule — simulation and lookdev pay 50% above the product rendering baseline not because Houdini is expensive but because the supply of people who can do that work is genuinely thin.
Whatever the licences cost you, they are overhead, and so is the workstation, the GPU, and the electricity burning overnight while a sequence renders. Render time is machine capacity you own and cannot sell twice; it belongs in the overhead figure that sets your floor, not in a billable-hours column, and cloud render farm costs should pass through to the client at cost as their own line item. Blender vs. Maya vs. Cinema 4D — Free, Paid, and What Each One Buys
This is the question every 3D freelancer asks at the start and almost everybody asks backwards. It is not "which software makes me more money" — none of them do. It is which line of your overhead you are buying, and which briefs it makes you eligible for.

The real cost of a paid licence is not the price. It is that a subscription is a fixed annual cost sitting against variable freelance income, and it renews in the quarter you had no work. Blender's cost is different but just as real: it is the briefs whose contract names another file format, which is a door that closes before you get to show anyone a reel. Neither cost is recoverable by charging more, because the client is buying the asset and has no view on what made it.
So the sequence is: start in Blender, and buy a licence the day a job you have already been offered requires one. Then put whatever you bought into the overhead field of the freelance rate calculator — a licence moves your floor by exactly its annual cost and moves your ceiling by nothing, and seeing those two facts in the same number is the fastest cure for treating software as an investment.
What survives a switch between all three is the craft, which is why the shelf below is mostly software-neutral. Topology, retopology, and lighting are the same problems in every package, and a book about them is still useful in ten years; a manual for one version of one application is useful for about eighteen months.

But the game figure hides a split. AAA and hard-surface work has no such substitute: you are modelling to a technical budget of polycounts, texel density, and LODs that somebody else wrote, and there is no store version of that.

Maya and 3ds Max are the studio pipeline standards — Maya in games and film, 3ds Max in architectural visualization, usually alongside V-Ray or Corona. Cinema 4D dominates product and motion-adjacent 3D, ZBrush the high-poly sculpting of characters, Substance 3D Painter the PBR texturing of game assets, and Houdini the procedural and simulation work at the top of the pay ladder. Unreal Engine has become the delivery target for real-time archviz and every game asset. The software does not set the rate; the pipeline does. Nobody pays a Blender artist less for using Blender, but a studio contract that specifies Maya deliverables is not negotiable, and Houdini's presence on the list is why VFX pays what it does.
Should 3D artists charge hourly or per model?
Charge per model once the brief is concrete and you have made the thing before — a prop from a reference sheet, a SKU from a photo, an asset against a spec sheet you have read. Charge hourly when the design does not exist yet, which in practice means concept work, characters before the art director has settled on a face, and anything where the client says "we will know it when we see it". Charge a retainer for anything recurring: catalog rendering and studio asset pipelines are the same work every month, and a monthly fee pays you for the lighting setup and the pipeline you already built rather than the twenty minutes it takes to reuse them.
How do you bill render time?
Render time is not billable attention, but it is not free either — it is machine capacity you own and cannot sell twice, and clients will treat an overnight render as costless unless the contract says otherwise. Fold local render time into your overhead so it lands in your hourly rate, and pass through cloud render farm costs as a separate line item at cost. The number that actually matters is the re-render: a lighting change after final frames means running the whole sequence again on hardware you have already paid for. Price revisions by approval stage — model, then lighting, then final — so a geometry change after lighting lock is a new project rather than a free one.
