Every tier here sits below the equivalent app developer band, and it is worth being blunt about why, because the usual explanation is flattering and wrong. Game code is not easier. Real-time simulation, frame budgets, and netcode are harder engineering than most of what ships in a CRUD app. The gap is a supply gap: far more people want to build games than there are budgets to pay them, and a large share of the clients in this market are funding the work personally rather than from a business case. That is also why the ladder above matters less here than it does in web or mobile work — who signs the invoice moves your rate further than another two years of experience does.

Engine choice moves a mid-level rate by about 30 points from bottom to top. It moves the number of available contracts by far more than that, in the opposite direction.

The Godot row is the one most likely to be misread. There is nothing about GDScript that makes the same gameplay systems worth less than they are in Unity, and Godot is not a hobby engine — commercial titles ship on it. The discount is entirely a function of who hires for it: Godot contracts skew heavily toward solo founders spending their own savings, and personal money buys fewer hours than a production budget does. When the client is a funded studio or a business shipping a Godot-based tool, quote the Unity number.
The Unreal premium is real and narrower than its reputation. Fifteen points is not enough to justify learning a second engine on your own time if you already have a Unity pipeline and a client list. It is enough to matter when it stacks: Unreal on console at mid-level is $90–$166/hr, because the two multipliers compound. Stacking is how game developers get paid well — one specialism rarely does it alone.

Mid-level US rates on Unity. Console is +20% against the PC baseline, VR +15%, mobile −5%, web −15%. Stack these with the engine multipliers above rather than reading them in isolation.
Console pays the largest premium on the table and it is not a difficulty premium either. Certification requires approved devkits and an NDA, which means the pool of freelancers who can legally take the contract is small and the client cannot shop it widely. What that premium buys you in return is a schedule you do not control: a failed cert pass is somebody else's decision on somebody else's timetable. Price the cert milestone separately and put a resubmission in the plan, because assuming a first-pass approval is the fastest way to turn a profitable console contract into an unpaid month.
Mobile sits slightly below PC despite carrying two store reviews, which looks backwards until you look at who is buying. Mobile has the largest pool of contracts in games and the most price pressure in it, and the store submission work is close enough to what a general mobile app developer does that clients feel entitled to compare quotes across both markets.

There are two completely different freelance jobs behind the phrase "freelance game developer," and the same hourly rate means different money in each.

The arithmetic is the argument. At the same $90/hr, a year of team contracting pays $124,200 and a year of solo whole-game contracts pays $91,080, because the solo developer also does design iteration, the build pipeline, store submission, and the rework after every playtest — none of which appears on a feature list anybody agreed to pay for. To land in the same place, a solo contract has to carry roughly $123/hr. Almost nobody quotes that, which is the single most common reason experienced solo developers feel underpaid while believing their rate is fine.

The middle rows are the $65–$120 mid-level band read from its bottom and its top. The first row sits below it because the money is personal; the last sits above it because a manufacturer buying a training simulator or a virtual production stage is not price-anchored to games at all. It is the same Unity and Unreal work in every row.
That last row is the most useful line on this page for anyone whose rate has been flat for years. Simulation, training, architectural visualization, automotive configurators, and virtual production all run on the engines you already know, and they are bought by companies that compare your quote against a software vendor rather than against an asset-store template. Nothing about the work gets easier. The buyer just stops flinching. Hourly is the default for anything attached to a live production. A studio that already has a design, a codebase, and a milestone plan is buying capacity, and capacity is what an hourly contract sells cleanly. It is also the only sane model for prototyping, where the entire point of the work is that nobody knows what the game is yet.
Flat project feesbelong on the far side of a signed design document, and games make that condition harder to satisfy than any other field on this site. "Make it fun" is not a spec, and fun is discovered by iteration — which is why fixed-fee game contracts fail on feel rather than on features. If you quote flat, quote a defined build: this many levels, this many enemy types, this many hours of iteration on the core loop, and a named number for anything past it. Retainers are the most underused model in game freelancing. A shipped game still needs engine upgrades, store-policy changes, crash triage, and seasonal content long after the launch invoice clears, and most freelancers walk away from that revenue because nobody asked them to stay. A 20-hour live-ops tier at a $90/hr midpoint is $1,800 a month arriving whether or not you win a new project; a 60-hour part-time slot is $5,400. Revenue share is the model unique to this market, and the rule is simple: take points on top of a cash rate, never in place of one. You are being asked to accept a discount today against a payout you cannot value, on a title whose marketing budget, release date, and platform placement are all outside your control. If you do take a share, write down what revenue it is calculated on, where you sit in the recoup order behind the platform cut and any advance, how often you get reported to, and what happens if the game is cancelled. Game figures are Unity on PC. Web developer figures are the React/Vue band and UX tiers are drawn slightly differently — mid is 2–5 years there — so read the columns as bands rather than a like-for-like year count.
The fourth row explains most of the first. An app developer and a web developer can both point at a written spec and say the work is finished. A game is finished when it feels right, and feel is found by building the same jump eleven times. That is a genuine pricing problem rather than a client-management failure, and it is why hourly and staged milestones protect game contracts better than flat fees do.
The UX designer column holds the highest mid-level floor of the four, and the reason matters if you want to raise your own. UX sells judgment about what should be built; game development, as most clients buy it, sells the building.
